The Boom of Home Medical Devices
In the past, many families kept simple medical devices such as thermometers, sphygmomanometers and wheelchairs. These practical and convenient devices were especially useful for households with patients suffering from chronic illnesses, enabling them to monitor conditions and seek medical treatment promptly.
In recent years, with rising living standards, people have paid growing attention to the health of themselves and their family members. Traditional basic medical devices can no longer meet household demands.
At present, major medical device companies across the country have set up dedicated counters for home medical devices. Most large shopping malls also feature such counters with a complete product range and frequent new arrivals. According to the supervisor of the medical device section at Beijing Department Store, home medical devices enjoy strong sales and fierce competition among retailers. Sales staff from Xidan Medical Instrument Company told reporters that their sales volume of home medical devices this year has more than doubled compared with the same period last year, and sales momentum remains robust in the second half of the year. Home medical devices are entering an increasing number of households.
A New Market for Home Medical Devices
A wide variety of nursing medical devices are also making their way into homes. At the China International Medical Equipment Fair (Spring) held at Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center, apart from one hall featuring custom booths from large enterprises showcasing large hospital equipment, the other four halls displayed "general-purpose" products from small and medium-sized manufacturers. "General-purpose means these medical devices are suitable not only for hospitals and clinics but also for home use," one exhibitor explained to reporters. He also pointed out a new direction for market development of such products: "When marketing general-purpose devices, we should not only target hospitals. Pharmacies, shopping malls and supermarkets are our new markets."
Small and medium exhibitors had little time for visitors who were not procurement targets. Therefore, the author pretended to be a buyer for a chain pharmacy and was warmly received by exhibitors selling general-purpose medical devices. The sales representative from Henan Kanghu Medical Devices Co., Ltd. actively introduced their patient transfer trolley for immobile users and invited the author to experience its lightweight design and functions first-hand. The trolley eliminates the strenuous work of lifting hemiplegic and disabled patients during transfers. Safety, portability and reduced care burden for family caregivers are its core advantages. Many onlookers gathered to watch the demonstration and recognized its value. Notably, the company plans to set up shared experience stores in cities nationwide to meet short-term usage needs. Many visitors enquired about operation details and pricing, and the trolley was regarded as cost-effective. Several wheelchair vendors from Shanghai patiently demonstrated operation and product features for every visitor. Domestic and foreign suppliers of medical oxygen concentrators claimed their products had broad market potential, good cost performance and would become hot sellers in chain pharmacies. For mature household products such as sphygmomanometers and blood glucose meters, exhibitors quickly discussed order quantities, rebates and payment terms with the "buyer".
It is evident that improved quality of life, rising health awareness and the approaching aging society have unlocked new market opportunities for general-purpose medical devices. Relevant enterprises, especially local SMEs, have identified this promising business segment. Nevertheless, despite the emerging market, serious product homogenization exists. Wheelchairs and oxygen concentrators from countless brands look diverse yet offer largely similar functions. The patient transfer trolley for hemiplegic patients manufactured in Henan stands out as a patented nursing product. It is priced affordably for middle- and low-income families and is well received by visitors. Homogenized alternatives vary wildly in price, making selection difficult. Even industry insiders struggled to explain the pricing inconsistencies. In addition, promotional leaflets for multifunctional therapeutic devices and lumbar/cervical traction devices frequently contain exaggerated claims such as curing all illnesses or "revolutionary breakthroughs". This reflects that rational marketing concepts have not yet been widely adopted by general medical device manufacturers.
New Home Medical Devices Are Becoming More Sophisticated
Driven by consumer demand, new home medical devices keep launching with increasingly comprehensive functions closely integrated into daily life. Instead of merely measuring basic health status, modern devices can detect and verify a full range of physiological indicators.
At the China International Medical Equipment Fair held at Beijing International Exhibition Center, a rich lineup of home medical devices impressed attendees. Electronic sphygmomanometers, low-frequency therapeutic devices, digital thermometers, electric toothbrushes, pedometers and home patient care products featured delicate workmanship and simple operation. Affordable domestic nursing products proved popular among consumers. Among health monitoring gadgets, body fat analyzers attracted the most attention. About the size of an old lunch box and fitted with two metal handgrips, users input height, age and weight before gripping the handles. After two minutes, the screen displays body fat percentage for reference against standard ranges.
An elderly couple carefully enquired about the functions and prices of electronic sphygmomanometers and tested them following staff guidance. They told reporters that their old sphygmomanometer lacked memory storage and required manual logging every day. They intended to purchase a new model with built-in memory for greater convenience.
The exhibition showcased how refined home medical devices have become. Many new models feature attractive, compact appearances alongside practical functions. For example, compact household ultrasonic nebulizers are highly popular. Designed for children and patients who struggle with oral medication, users simply fill the liquid chamber, press the button and inhale the mist. They are leak-proof and portable; the smallest version is no bigger than an electric shaver and runs on AC power or batteries. Another distinctive product is the high-frequency reciprocating electric toothbrush. According to staff, most people brush teeth for less than the recommended three minutes, while this toothbrush delivers 3,000 vibrations per minute for thorough plaque removal. There are also personal care items such as pen-sized facial epilators for women with elegant designs. Beyond disease prevention and treatment, these innovations penetrate every corner of daily life and become reliable companions for healthy living.
Brands Target Young Consumers
Traditionally, home medical devices served the elderly, the weak and sick people. Today, accelerated lifestyles, mounting work pressure and diversified wellness-focused functions draw young people to monitor their own health with medical devices.
In Japan, the mainstream concept combines hospital treatment with home self-monitoring. The market offers specialized medical devices tailored for young users, including high-precision digital thermometers for women accurate to two decimal places, helping females track subtle body temperature changes. These thermometers are widely favored.
A sales associate from Xidan Department Store said many buyers of modern home medical devices are young adults. Some purchase them for elderly family members, while a large number buy for personal use.
Some products carry names such as "Filial Child", showing merchants are targeting young buyers with strong purchasing power and openness to new products. Product packaging is stylish and contemporary to match young people’s aesthetic preferences. Many retailers launch gift sets for festivals including Spring Festival, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, bundling sphygmomanometers, thermometers, blood glucose monitors and nursing supplies. These gift packs are very popular among young customers.
Domestic or Imported Products?
As Beijing’s medical device market expands, international brands have entered the local market, including Omron, Panasonic, Citizen and Ishiguro from Japan, Johnson & Johnson from the United States and Boehringer Mannheim from Germany.
According to Liu Jinghua, warehouse supervisor of Xidan Medical Instrument Company, the firm distributes nearly forty models from more than ten domestic and overseas brands. Domestic products enjoy obvious price advantages and record far higher sales volumes than imported alternatives. However, domestic products suffer from inconsistent quality and relatively high repair rates, offset by responsive after-sales service that generally meets user needs. Imported brands are mostly represented in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai, making maintenance inconvenient for Beijing customers.
Interviews revealed imported devices feature elegant compact designs, simple operation and advanced technology yet command premium prices. For instance, patient transfer lifts usually cost upwards of 4,000 to 5,000 yuan. Domestic counterparts deliver solid practicality at moderate prices. Consumers are advised to consult sales staff carefully and select products based on individual needs.
Medical devices for home use are no longer limited to disease prevention and treatment. They enable users to measure health indicators anytime and anywhere, simplify care and reduce caregiving workloads. This trend reflects rising expectations for quality of life.
Have You Tried Home Medical Devices?
With deepened healthcare reform, home health monitoring is becoming a preferred affordable wellness solution for the public. Besides community and family doctors, many people adopt compact medical devices as convenient health assistants. Most of these devices were introduced from overseas in recent years and remain unfamiliar to many consumers.
The ear thermometer, widely used abroad, is one such imported home medical device. Mr. Wang Le, father of one-year-old twin girls, struggled with taking their temperature whenever they caught cold or fever, a troublesome task with traditional thermometers. During a shopping trip, he spotted a German ear thermometer. The manual stated that placing it in the ear for one second would deliver a reading once a beep sounded. Despite its high price of over 500 yuan, Mr. Wang decided to buy it.
Reporters recently visited home appliance counters at major shopping malls including Hangzhou Tower and local department stores and discovered a surprisingly diverse product range.
Medical devices cover all parts of the human body with varied functions: digital thermometers, electric toothbrushes, low-frequency therapeutic devices, sphygmomanometers, throat care devices, fat analyzers, massagers and specialized nursing aids for disabled patients, priced from over 100 yuan to thousands of yuan. Products include imports, Sino-foreign joint venture goods and domestic models. Main international brands are Panasonic, Omron, Braun and Philips, while Kanghubang is a representative domestic brand. Xia Lei, manager of the home appliance department at Hangzhou Tower, said they began introducing these compact medical devices five to six years ago. As health awareness grows, sales keep rising year on year, with most buyers being middle-income customers pursuing high quality of life.
Sales associates at these malls confirmed sphygmomanometers are the top sellers and occupy the largest counter space. Omron alone carries more than ten models including upper-arm and wrist types, ranging from 200 yuan to over 1,000 yuan. Buyers fall into two groups: middle-aged and elderly users purchasing for themselves, and young shoppers buying them as gifts for parents. Pedometers, patient transfer trolleys, low-frequency therapy units and digital thermometers also sell well, many purchased as gifts for business partners and family members, as health gifts are widely regarded as thoughtful.
Industry experts note that uniform national standards for nursing and wellness products are still lacking, leading to uneven product quality in the market. Some manufacturers make exaggerated and misleading claims, confusing uninformed consumers. Different wellness devices are designed for different conditions, yet many shoppers buy without fully understanding indications, lowering trust in the category. Many salespeople only highlight benefits while omitting contraindications and unsuitable user groups. Some customers find they are not eligible after reading manuals. Consumers should assess personal health conditions and read instructions carefully before purchasing therapeutic devices.
Patient transfer trolleys for immobile users on the market are available in manual, power-assisted and electric versions. Each version is subdivided into basic models, models with bedpan functions and mobility-enhanced variants. Select according to your family’s actual needs.
